A Walk through Classical Irvington and Buffet Lunch

Take a tour of the remarkable historic district of Irvington with expert guides, followed by a buffet lunch served in an amazing private home that played an important role in introducing Craftsman architecture to Portland.

This walk through Irvington with your hosts, James Heuer and Robert Mercer, focuses on its boom years between 1905 and 1929, when the area first became a swank retreat for the newly rich, and then evolved with changing transport technology to become a middle-class and working-class enclave. The two-hour tour includes homes designed by many of Portland’s most prominent architects of the period: Joseph Jacobberger, Raymond Hockenberry, Ellis Lawrence, David Williams, and others. You will see the Portland White House, the Silas Doernbecher house, and the Gilliland house.

After the tour, enjoy a buffet lunch in the Nicolai-Cake-Olson House designed by architect Emil Schacht in 1905. The home was carefully restored, room by room, by current owners by Heuer and Mercer, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
