Description

Whether you are a "newbie" to advocacy or an experienced veteran there is always something to learn to build your effectiveness. Based on 40 years of working for social change in Portland, Rex Burkholder will share what he has learned about successful citizen activism including values-based messaging, leadership development, and coalition building across cultures and ideologies. Founder of three major nonprofits (Bicycle Transportation Alliance, Coalition for a Livable Future and Oregon Outdoor Education Coalition), three-term Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder is now leading a campaign to restore Outdoor School in Oregon. Rex is a social entrepreneur, author, and strategic advisor for sustainable solutions. As the author of the 2015 book, The Activist’s Toolkit, he will address how to make your voice heard by decision makers and your fellow citizens on issues of importance to you.

You can read more about Burkholder’s work at http://gettingto2100.org/. Copies of The Activist’s Toolkit will be available for purchase. Bring a lunch and settle in for some spirited discussion of community-building through activism, with time for questions at the end.

This session on citizen activism is one in a series of “Lunch and Learns” during National Historic Preservation Month. The AHC is easily reached via streetcar or buses #6 and #15. Bike racks in front. Some on-street parking is available.
